Have you ever wondered why cleaners advertised as being pH neutral are better than regular cleaners? This is often highlighted as a benefit of certain products but not everyone knows what this means exactly. Allow me to answer that question and share my list of pH-neutral cleaners.
What Does the pH Scale Measure?
Water’s pH is simply a measure of how acidic or basic it is. The numbers range from 0 to 14, with 7 representing neutrality. Acidity is indicated by pH values less than 7, whereas baseness is shown by pH values more than 7. The pH of water is actually a measure of the relative number of free hydrogen and hydroxyl ions present in the solution.
Water with a higher concentration of free hydrogen ions is acidic, whereas water with a higher concentration of free hydroxyl ions is basic. In light of the fact that pH can be influenced by chemicals in water, pH is an important indicator of whether or not water is changing chemically.
The pH value is expressed in “logarithmic units.” Each number reflects a ten-fold increase or decrease in the acidity or basicity of water. The acidity of water with a pH of five is ten times greater than the acidity of water with a pH of six.
What is a Neutral pH Level?
In terms of pH, the scale goes from 0 to 14, with a value of 7 regarded as neutral. Any pH of less than 7 is acidic, whereas a pH of more than 7 is alkaline (or basic).
What is a pH Neutral Cleaner?
The term “pH neutral cleaner” refers to a cleaning agent that has a pH of 7. Generally speaking, pH-neutral cleaners fall anywhere between 6 and 8 on the scale of neutrality. Consider pH levels when purchasing industrial cleaning chemicals to avoid damaging surfaces.
Why Use a pH Neutral Cleaner?
There are a few reasons why both private and public places might want to switch to pH neutral cleaners:
- Reduces the likelihood of skin irritation by keeping pH as close as possible to that of humans.
- They are less likely to damage the surface you’re trying to clean.
- They are safe for the environment.
- They’re excellent if you have children or pets.
pH neutral cleaners are good for homes, hospitals, schools, daycare centers, gyms, office buildings, restaurants, and more.
Does Adding Water to Cleaners Change the pH?
Water will alter the pH of an acid or base. Adding water to an acid or base solution lowers the concentration of ions in the solution because water is composed of water molecules. Adding water to an acidic solution reduces the concentration of H + ions, raising the pH toward 7.
List of pH Neutral Dish Soaps
Generally, mild dish soap is the best choice for neutrality. Generally, if your dish soap is marketed as “gentle,” “soft,” or “great for hands,” its pH value is around 7.
Dish soap’s mildness makes it ideal for use on a daily basis. Dish soap won’t harm most surfaces and can be used in a variety of locations besides the kitchen sink.
